In most countries of the Christian world, Christmas is the main family holiday, and Christmas cards are issued. In Russia, before the 1917 revolution, both New Year and Christmas cards were issued. But in the USSR religion ceased to be promoted - it was forbidden to celebrate Christmas, and instead of the Christmas holidays they began to celebrate the beginning of the new year. Christmas cards began to appear in the USSR only in the early 1990s.
