Selection of decks of cards
The cardinal directions are so popular in playing cards that numerous decks have been created. This Belgian deck of playing cards, produced between 1875 and 1880 by Daveluy (Bruges), stands out from the crowd. The artwork is gorgeous, and the suit dedicated to Africa is somewhat surprising—all the characters resemble Arabs. Not a single representative of the black race is visible. However, in the Americas, the Native Americans look more like Africans.
The artist is talented, but apparently not very knowledgeable, as is the publisher. However, it's easy to judge from the 21st century. The years the deck was published are still quite ancient...
