The first edition of this deck was made in 1911, the cards were issued with a gold edge called Top grade. The name Russian style appeared later in the 1930s.
Sketches for cards were developed at the German factory of card games of the company Dondorf (Frankfurt) in 1911. Clothing of kings, ladies and jacks is made in the style of the XVII century; aces - images of shields surrounded by ancient Russian weapons and armor. The output of the deck is dedicated to the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty.

The participants in the court ball became prototypes of 11 of the 12 semi-figures:

    Jack of Hearts - Nikolai Alexandrovich Volkov, Adjutant to Grand Duke Admiral-General Alexei Alexandrovich, Lieutenant; according to other versions, lieutenant of the Life Guards of the Preobrazhensky Regiment Nikolay Petrovich Shter or the cornet of the Life Guards of the Horse Regiment Alexei Romanovich Tizdel (costume of a boyar or a high-ranking official).
    Jack of diamonds - Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich (falconry costume in festive attire).
    Jack of clubs - Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich (field suit of the Tsarevich).
    Jack of spades - Alexander Nikolaevich Bezak, staff captain, squadron commander of the Cavalier Guard regiment, adjutant of Grand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich (boyar costume).

Queen of Hearts - Grand Duchess Ksenia Alexandrovna (costume of the boyar).
    Queen of diamonds - Countess Alexandra Tolstaya, maid of honor of Their Imperial Majesties the Sovereign Empresses Maria Fedorovna and Alexandra Fedorovna; according to other versions, Princess Vera Maksimilianovna Kudasheva (née Countess Nirod) or Sofia Petrovna Durnovo (née light-princess Princess Volkonskaya) (costume of the hawthorn).
    Queen of clubs - Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna (costume of the princess).
    Queen of spades - Princess Zinaida Nikolaevna Yusupova, Countess Sumarokova-Elston (costume of the noblewoman).
    King of Hearts - Emperor Nicholas II (costume of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich).
   King diamonds is Nikolai Nikolayevich Gartung, a real state adviser, the stalmeister of the Highest Court (boyar costume).
    King of clubs - Count Mikhail Nikolaevich Grabbe (costume of the tenant).
    King of spades - there is no prototype (the costume of Ivan the Terrible depicted in the picture of A. D. Litovchenko “Ivan the Terrible shows the treasures to the English ambassador Gorsey”)
